Annotation
On April 16, 2008,
the Institute of Europe, RAS, held round-table discussion "Ruble as
a global and reserve currency: reality or Utopia?" The discussion
was attended by prominent scientists from Institute of Economy,
RAS, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, RAS,
Institute of Europe, RAS, Financial Academy of the Russian
Government, State University of Management, Moscow State Institute
of International Relations of Russian Foreign Ministry, as well as
representatives of Russian banking community.
The participants
analyzed in detail the causes and scale of global financial crisis,
as well as its consequences for international monetary system. The
discussion focused on prospects of dollar as a global reserve
currency in foreseeable future and on possibility to promote the
international status of Russian ruble. Some reports were devoted to
practical steps of raising ruble to the status of reserve currency
for regional economic organizations on the post-Soviet area.
