Annotation
On June 8, 2007 a
science-practical conference on the subject "Black Sea cooperation:
looking for partnership in 21st century" was held at the Institute
of Europe of Russian Academy of Sciences. In the conference a whole
number of issues on the Black Sea region was considered and some
ways of their solution were presented. The issues on increasing
inter-civilization and inter-confessional contradictions were
discussed as well as power engineering and resources factors,
military-political confrontations and the terrorism, new political
configurations and priorities, likeness and difference in strategic
goals and methods of EU and NATO, the US interests and policy in the
wider Black Sea region; the question of geopolitical role of the
region was touched upon, its importance under the conditions of
aggravating economic and political contradictions. "Frozen"
conflicts and the prospects of their regulation.
Special attention was paid to
the forthcoming 15th jubilee summit of BSEC member states'
authorities in Istanbul in June 2007 concerning the issue on the
main results of the organization's activities for the last 15 years.
It dealt with BSEC acting structures, their evolution and
effectiveness, enlargement of partnership with neighboring countries
and regions. The policy of Russia in the wider Black Sea region took
common appreciation; the specific of Russia's relations with some
countries of the region was displayed (contemporary situation,
historic traditions, participation in regulating the arguing issues
and looking for compromises). Economic opportunities of Russia'
southern regions in the enlargement process of Black Sea cooperation
were discussed as well as possible directions and spheres of
collaboration: transport, power engineering and telecommunications. |
