ANNOTATION

The monograph is devoted to the history of the origin and development of a new trend in activities of the European Union, which emerged at the turn from XX to XXI century - European security and defence policy (ESDP). The author analyses prehistory and major factors which led to its creation, formation of the European security strategy, evolution of structures and first operations -civilian as well as military - carried out by the European Union in the framework of ESDP. Achievements and hurdles in its realization are examined as well as problems and the search of ways of their solution in interaction between EU and NATO. Particular attention is devoted to relations and cooperation between Russia and the European Union in the sphere of external security.
